Daniel,
I don't disagree with you. But those are tremendous records. And you don't make a great record without a pretty damn good song!
Thanks for reading and commenting.
Best wishes,

She was wonderful, one of the greatest vocalists ever, but honestly I don't think these songs would have meant much in anyone's hands but her (and the phenomenal musical team she had, as you point out). I think you can measure a truly great song by the fact that it gets used in a variety of contexts and genres by different artists, and none of these really meets those criteria. Now, there *were* some great writers in Memphis, many of them extremely under-appreciated (Dan Penn anyone?) but I honestly don't think she was one of them.

She used the moment to elevate herself as someone who came from rough beginnings and ultimately crafted the career she is known for. The connection she made to Aretha could not have been more insignificant. Aretha had nothing to do with the things she spoke of, like falling from the top of a cake on stage and losing a shoe, leaving her life in Paris or wherever it was to learn the guitar and write her own songs the story was all about herself. She spoke of Aretha for probably 20 seconds out of a 7-minute speech. It was absolutely self-indulgent.
