What poetry. I’m fascinated by his decision not to repeat the title line in the 2nd verse, as you point out, and returning to the metaphor of the birds. His 1st verse is all about sounds, the 2nd is about sights. I think the 3rd is all emotion – in the 3rd verse the emotion takes over directly from the metaphors of sight and sound, then the 4th harkens back to the sound and sight metaphors before it delivers the final blow, connecting all that poetic power right to the listener: “I wonder where you are.” A stunner.
