I’d add that many great (and some groundbreaking) songs have been written by writers who had no idea what the ‘rules’ were… had never thought about it. But certainly they had internalized some of the traditions, just from listening.

They aren’t arbitrary or some classroom exercise. They are more like the documented lessons of history.
