That little fragment, that snippet of words and/or melody that comes to mind at odd moments? Sometimes annoying, sometimes amusing, a line pops into your head just when you least expect it… And then, if attention isn’t paid to it… poof… like Keyser Soze, it disappears.

Guess what? That annoying melody or phrase… that could become a song. It’s often at least the beginnings of one.

It can be so easy to take those little moments for granted. But in reality songs don’t usually announce themselves in a grand manner.

Sometimes they do. You get an idea and it’s really exciting; it really feels good; important, worth attending to right now… after all, it arrived with such fanfare.

And it’s great when that happens. But song ideas can also can announce themselves shyly, with hesitation, feet shuffling, trying to get your attention from the back of the room… ‘Ahem… Sir or Madam; excuse me…’.

It’s worth paying attention to those ideas too. They can turn into good songs.

  1. If you’re like me you keep a digital recorder by your bed at home and in your pocket when you’re not. Those little snippets can turn to flashes of brilliance when revisited.
